Although aerobic activities like running and cycling burn more calories
than weightlifting, it is entirely possible to use free weights to lose
weight. Using free weights several times a week will build muscle, which
will in turn speed up your metabolism (because muscle tissue burns more
calories than fat tissue). Diet and aerobic exercise will still play an
important part in your weight loss program, but building muscles with
free weights will help you lose weight more quickly and keep it off
long-term.
